PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

A total of 200 students from the BGCAS and 200 students from GUAS attended the Summer 2011 Academy of their choice, providing they register and are selected by the BGCAS and the GUAS Office.  The three week Academy was offered Monday through Friday 8:30 am to 10:30 am for the BGCAS students and 9:30 am to 12 noon for the GUAS students.  The Academies were:  Math Trek, Autodesk, Pre-SAT, Reading & Writing, Graphic Arts, Music, Read Aloud, Robotics, Volleyball, Basketball, Soccer and Softball.


For BGCAS youth only:
8:30 to 9:30 am daily for 3 weeks

For GUAS Cohort only:
9:30 to 12:00 pm daily for 3 weeks

  • PRE-SAT ACADEMY:  (GUAS Students)

The PRE-SAT Academy is for GUAS students who wish to advance their skills and knowledge in taking the SAT college entry exam.  The PRE-SAT Academy will be held at the ASCC Classroom #26 for group of 25 GUAS students for three weeks providing the students 3 hours per day SAT training session. 

GOALS:  Students will gain an understanding of the importance of the SAT Reasoning Test.  Students will learn about taking the SAT by covering the exam format, timing, and scoring of the test, as well as developing test taking skills.

OBJECTIVES:
Participants will be able to:

  • Develop study skills in math, critical reading, and writing;
  • Learn and use an estimated 250  new vocabulary words;
  • Review and practice rules applied to grammar and punctuation;
  • Learn how to plan and write a persuasive essay.

 

  • MATH TREK  ACADEMY:  (GUAS and BGCAS Students Sessions)

The Math Trek Academy is for students who wish to advance their Math, Algebra and Geometry skills and knowledge.  The Math Trek Academy will be held at the ASCC Trades and Technology Division (TTD).  GUAS will host a group of 50 students and will provide 3 hours a day assistive technology learning advance Algebra session for three weeks.  GUAS/BGCAS will also provide 1 hour per day Math Trek training for 50 BGCAS students during the 3-week Summer Academy to basic math and pre-Algebra technology learning.

THE GOAL:  To provide Math skills training through assistive technology programs for students who desire to enhance their skills and knowledge from basic math to advance to Algebra I and Geometry.  The Math Trek Academy will be using Math Trek Basic Math, Algebra I and Geometry Tiling computer software. 

OBJECTIVES:
Students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate basic technology skills i.e., basic computer skills, Math Trek technology learning software;
  2. Participate in group study skills and present their group Basic Math, Algebra, Geometry projects to the class;
  3. Understand concepts related to Basic Math, Algebra I and Geometry;
  4. Gain a better understanding and usage of the Scientific Calculator;
  5. Better understand the practical use of Basic Math, Algebra and Geometry in our daily lives.

 

  • AUTODESK ACADEMY:  (GUAS Students)

Twenty five students will be given a 3 hour hands on training session per day for three weeks.  The Autodesk training will be held at the ASCC TTD Computer Lab.  The training will be taught by the GUAS Systems Manager and will cover basic drafting and mechanical engineering designs using 3dx Max Autodesk software program.

THE GOAL:  To provide students with an introductory vocational technology program “Autodesk Inventor and 3ds Max” that teaches advance mechanical and drafting technology skills and knowledge.

OBJECTIVES:
Students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate basic technology skills i.e., Basic computer skills, Autodesk programs;
  • Maneuver and demonstrate skills in learning Autodesk and 3ds Max Curriculum;
  • Participate and present to the class their Autodesk projects;
  • Understand concepts related to Autodesk Inventors and or 3ds Max;
  • Understand the practical use of Autodesk in our daily lives.

 

  • GRAPHIC ARTS:   (BGCAS Students)

Twenty five students per week will be given a 1 hour hands on training session per day.  The Graphic Arts training will be held in the ASCC TTD Computer Lab.  The training will be taught by the GUAS Systems Manager and will cover basic art by using the Paintbrush software program.  Students will be given the opportunity to practice their Paintbrush skills by drawing 6 pre-designed drawings.

THE GOAL:  To provide students with an introductory technology art training program.  The paintbrush program will teach the students the basic computer technology usage skills and knowledge.

OBJECTIVES:
Students will be able to:
1.   Demonstrate basic technology skills i.e., computer start up procedures and Paintbrush  
Software program;
2.   Maneuver and demonstrate skills in learning basic computer skills;
3.   Participate and present to the class their Art projects.

 

  • READING & WRITING ACADEMY:  (GUAS and BGCAS Students)

The Reading and Writing Academy is for students who wish to advance their Writing and Reading skills and knowledge.  The Reading & Writing Academy will be held at the ASCC Classroom #27.  GUAS will host a group of 25 students for three weeks and will provide 3 hours a day training seminar.  25 BGCAS student received one hour per day for the three week Academy. 

THE GOAL:  This session will teach the importance of Reading and Writing emphasizing on reading comprehension frameworks; the importance of visualization during the reading process and how to maximize writing skills based on the direct teaching of a framework for writing skills that focuses on syntax, developing sentences; and writing paragraphs and essays. 

OBJECTIVES:
Participants will be able to:

        • Improve study skills in critical reading;
        • Improve critical writing skills with the review and practice of rules applied to grammar and punctuation;
        • Apply Read Aloud Practices;
        • Work in groups sharing learned concepts, thoughts and ideas.

                    

  • ROBOTICS ACADEMY:  (GUAS and BGCAS students)

 

Students will be given the opportunity to experience the technological and mechanical ability to Robotics l Technology training program.  25 GUAS students will be given a three weeks, 3 hour hands on training session per day.  50 BGCAS students will be given a three week one hour per day Robotic Training.  The Robotics training will be held in the ASCC TTD Electronics Lab, the training will be taught by the ASCC Electronics Instructor and BGCAS Coordinators.   

THE GOAL:  To provide students with the introductory hands on Robotics training which will include respect for basic electronic tools, assembling a simple Robotic vehicle and operations of the Robotic vehicle.  BGCAS will be given the basic knowledge of Robotics operations of BGCAS Race Cars.   

OBJECTIVES:
Students will be able to:

  1. Understand basic electronic tools and principle functions of electronic equipment;
  2. Understand and respect the principles of team work when working on a single mechanical vehicle;
  3. As a team GUAS students will assemble a Robotic vehicle;
  4. Each member will have an understanding of constructing the Robotic vehicle;
  5. Each BGCAS student will be able to operate basic driving skills of the robotic vehicle.

 

  • EMS FIRST AID ACADEMY:  (BGCAS students)

BGCAS students will be given EMS First Aid training by experienced LBJ EMS First Aid staff members.  50 BGCAS students will be given one hour per day for the 3 week Academy.  Basic life-saving skills as well as proper life behavior habits was the major emphasis of the training.  Students practice CPR and basic life saving skills.

 

OBJECTIVES:
Students will be able to:

  1. Understand the importance of EMS services and their role in our community.
  2. Understand the importance of practicing normal healthy behavioral habits, i.e., crossing the street, being careful and watching what you are doing, keeping calm in case of an emergency, etc.
  3. Understanding and practicing basic life-saving skills, i.e. Calling for help, stopping bleeding, practicing CPR, etc.
  4.  Regulate and monitor heart pulse.
  5. Gain a clear understanding of the importance of the EMS services and the many career opportunities that health care offers.

 

  • MUSIC ACADEMY:  (BGCAS students)

The Music Academy is for any BGCAS student who wishes to join BGCAS choral singing group.  The Music Academy will be held at the ASCC Music Training Room.  BGCAS/GUAS will host a group of 40 students for three weeks and will provide 4 hours per day Music training seminar. 

THE GOAL:  This session will help enhance student’s skill and talents to the joy of choral group singing.  A number of selected songs will be practice which will be performed at the Summer Academy Closing Ceremony.

OBJECTIVES: 
Students will be able to:

  1. Improve music reading skills.
  2. Improve singing skills.
  3. Be able to sing with other students in their voice range.
  4. Learn new songs.
  5. Be able to perform for the 400 in attendance closing ceremony.

 

  • MARINE SCIENCE ACADEMY:  (GUAS students)

25 students participated in the Marine Science Academy in partnership with the AS Department of Marine Wildlife Resources.  The Marine Science Academy will discuss the importance of our marine life ecosystem to include Fisheries, Wildlife and law enforcement in protecting our environment as well as to discuss the potential threat of global warming.  The Marine Science Academy will involve traveling to a coral reef location to explore and conduct educational activities.

THE GOAL:   To increase the student’s awareness by understanding the magnitude of American Samoa’s marine wildlife resources.  Students will observe and discuss the vocational skills and responsibilities tasked by the Dept. of Marine and Wildlife resources.
OBJECTIVE:
Students will be able to:
1.         Identify agencies whose task is to monitor Fisheries, Wildlife, Environmental Enforcement and off shore data;
2.         Understand and discuss the importance of caring for our island’s marine resources;
3.         Observe and identify the delicate coral reef;
4.         Gain a greater understanding of the marine wildlife ecosystem.

 

  •  SPORTS ACTIVITES:  (BGCAS students)

BGCAS/GUAS with the partnership of four athletic sports organizations provided four sports programs for all 200 BGCAS students.  The Island Wide Volleyball Association, FIFA, Launiusaelua and AS Softball Association together with their coaches and volunteers provided a daily sports training for 50 BGCAS students attending each of the four sports. 

GOAL:  Teach students the basic rules and the proper sport techniques of each individual sport activity:  Softball, Soccer, Basketball and Volleyball.

OBJECTIVES:
Students will be able to:

  • Understand the importance of warm up’s and stretching.
  • Understand that there are rules to all sports and that they must be followed.
  • Participate in teams, emphasizing the excitement of good sportsmanship.
Gain the knowledge of learning the rules of the game and enjoying the sport
