Reading Program
Read and Write for Incentives
In the past four school years, GUAS has implemented a Teacher training session that focuses on Reading and Writing skills. GUAS purchased hundreds of classic high school reading books (paper back) and by distributing them to the cohort English Classroom teachers to assist in their reading and writing assignments. Teachers will assign a book to a student, who will in turn write a book report for each book they read. Students will be awarded a gift certificate for each book report they complete. Books distributed to the high school cohort English Teachers include: Treasure Island, Of Mice and Men, Hamlet, Prince and the Pauper, The King and I, Fiddler on the Roof, Holes, Scarlet Letter, Old Man by the Sea and more.
Reading and write for incentives can increase a student's reading and writing skills. The activity is also intended to increase student's interest in learning those skills. At first, GUAS devised an incentive for student to read contemporary high school reading classics and by doing so they would earn tickets to the ASCC Fine Arts Musical performance during each semester Fall and Spring. Currently, with the absence of professional performance by ASCC Arts Department, students will have a choice of getting a gift certificate to buy lunch at the famous fast food places such as McDonald's and Carl's Junior, a phone card fom Blue Sky Communications or a movie ticket to Wallace Theaters.
2009 - 2010 ASCC Fine Arts Performances
GUAS purchased hundreds of high school reading paper backs and assigned them to the cohort English Teachers who integrated them into their classroom curriculum. Students were to read a book and write a one page book report to be turned in to their Teacher. Many of the Teachers also required students to provide a presentation in class to their peers as they completed reading their books. The students, after reading and writing a book report would select another paper back to read, enjoy and to earn another ticket to the wonderful performances given each semester by the ASCC Fine Arts Department.

April 30, May 1 & 2, The ASCC Fine Arts Department under the leadership of Dr. Paul Posesi Department Chairperson, Fine Arts Instructor Mrs. Reggie Meredith, Music Instructor Kiki Tuiasosopo and Play Director Ms. Carmen Gallaus worked tirelessly to prepare their actors, artist and musicians day and night with love and devotion. By far the finest performance presented by the ASCC students as well as the younger cast members from the island community.
