Assistive Technology
HOW GEAR UP TECHNOLOGY WORKS
In the past three years GEAR UP has initiated an integrating assistive technology approach into the English and Math cohort classrooms. Several technology programs were selected that are designed to engage both teachers and students to English, Math and Classroom management.
All GUAS Teachers were given training sessions to the MarkBook Classroom Management technology program where data collected assisted in monitoring GUAS student achievement.
All GUAS Students were given access to the Math Trek, Pre-Algebra and Algebra I assistive learning software programs. The Technology Assistive Language Learning (TALL) program was uploaded in all cohort school computer labs and made available to cohort English Teachers to use with their students.
A language learning system that fully integrates the use of face-to-face instruction and technology-assisted instruction. It gives room for teacher-student interaction manner rather than merely computer-based learning.
With it’s unique capacity to translate English text to Samoan and vise versa, TALL raises the interest of our Samoan students to learn English comfortably on their own. English Level 1 provides all the instructions with the capability to translate all instructions to Samoan.
Students can also check on their progress and be able to evaluate their performance. TALL is also accessible at all GUAS cohort High Schools.
Math Trek 7 & 8/Algebra 1 & 2
Pre-ALGEBRA and ALGEBRA 1 is a curriculum-based program. It contains interactive tutorials, problem solving, activities, explorations, exercises, various tools (scientific calculator, glossary, and journal), assessment components and student tracking. Features: Numbers; Exponents; Polynomials; Factoring; Rational Expressions; Equations; Inequalities; Functions; Geometric Relationships; Statistical Relationships; Linear Functions; Linear Systems; Linear Inequalities; Quadratic Equations; Quadratic Functions; Includes a teacher's resource manual.
GUAS has been using this fantastic software as means of improving GUAS students’ Math skills. The after school sessions is where the program has been mainly used so that the students can get help on areas that they didn’t get during the regular class hours.
GUAS purchased Math Trek site licenses for all cohort school (Elementary and High Schools) and has provided hours of teacher training and classroom tutoring in the effort to introduce this teaching technology strategy into the GUAS schools.
Mark Book
GUAS has implemented the use of Mark Book as a very important tool to manage classes that are directly benefited from GUAS services. GUAS teachers were trained and are encouraged to use this very significant tool for their classroom management.
With the help of Mark Book software some GUAS teachers were able to perform daily classroom management routines such as:
- Preparing a class roster;
- Record / Analyze attendance and punctuality;
- Analyze achievement;
- Generating paper and email report cards;
- Import / export reporting data;
- Accessing parent and student telephone numbers and email addresses;
- Display student birthdays and ages;
- Building web reports;
- And Creating report card
GUAS can now produce Mark Book online reports for all GUAS students and can be accessed from anywhere in the world via the GUAS website:

Autodesk
The Autodesk Software Package is a vocational technology program that focuses on 2D and 3D design software for use in architecture, engineering, building construction, manufacturing, media and entertainment.

GUAS has full access to the following Autodesk Programs and is progressively introducing GUAS students to these top of the line designing software. The programs are: AutoCAD, Autodesk 3ds Max, Autodesk Inventor Pro, Autocad Revit for Architectural drafting.

Through partnership with ASCC Institute of Trades and Technology (ITT) GUAS is able to conduct the Autodesk training in the ITT Computer Labs.
GUAS is also hosting a College campus After-School course to Autodesk Inventor for all interested and qualified GUAS students. A summer program is also schedule for three, one week, 4 hour per day Autodesk sessions with all interested GUAS students who register into the Summer Autodesk Mini-Camp Session.

Easy Tech
Easy Tech is a web based program that provides computer aided lessons to help students learn about the computer with the integration into core subjects such as Math, English, and Science. GUAS in its early stage adopted this program in order to familiarize teachers and students with the fundamentals of the computer.Easy Tech was implemented during year-two in all GUAS cohort Elementary Schools. Training sessions were provided to all cohort teachers.
